If you have a damaged tooth, you know how uncomfortable it can be. Damaged teeth make it difficult for you to enjoy the foods you love and can make you feel self-conscious when you smile or laugh.
At Hurley Family Dentistry, we want you to always have a reason to smile. A crown (also known as a cap) is a restoration designed to provide strength and restore the appearance and structure of a tooth that is damaged or fragile.
When Are Crowns Used?
We may recommend a crown if you have a tooth that:
- Is broken
- Has extensive decay
- Requires a large filling
- Shows signs of cracking.
By crowning the tooth, we can often prevent the need for additional treatment in the future, such as a root canal or extraction.
What Can I Expect at My Crown Appointment?
To make and place a crown, two appointments will be required.
At the first appointment, we will prepare your tooth for the crown. We begin by anesthetizing the tooth so you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Next, we’ll take a preliminary impression, which will be used to make a temporary crown. Following this impression, we will remove any decay or old fillings in the tooth. It may be necessary to shape or build up the tooth so that the crown will fit properly.
Once the tooth is prepped for the crown, we will take another impression. This impression will be used by the dental lab to create your crown. Using the primary impression, Dr. Charles or Dr. Emily will create a temporary crown, which we will cement in place to protect the prepared tooth while your permanent crown is being made.
In two weeks, you’ll return to our Chesterfield dental office so that we can place your permanent crown. Dr. Charles or Dr. Emily will remove the temporary crown and clean the tooth so that no cement remains. We’ll try on the new crown and check the fit. When both you and your dentist are satisfied that the fit is correct, we’ll cement your permanent crown in place and you’ll be free to enjoy the rest of the day.
What About “Crowns in a Day”?
We know that a lot of offices are offering “crowns in a day” to their patients, and we know how appealing and convenient this can sound!
At Hurley Family Dentistry, we constantly strive to provide the highest level of care for our patients. We pay close attention to new technology as it arises, and we check it out thoroughly to see if it’s a technology that will improve care for our patients. When it comes to “crowns in a day,” however, we’ve found that the technology simply isn’t to the level that we would like to see at this point. In fact, “crowns in a day” often take more chair time to place than a traditional crown!
Additionally, because crowns created using in-office milling are only available in a limited number of shades, it’s much harder to get an exact match. In some cases, this can lead to the crown sticking out like a sore thumb.
Our goal is quality not speed. We prefer to have skilled and trusted lab professionals craft our crowns to our exact specifications for the best functionality and esthetics. We want you to be happy with your smile and the restorative dentistry we provide.
